The Mel-8704R REM ATDD SDD device is a single-axis EMF meter, temperature sensor and includes an electronic eye that acts as a “shadow detector” (SDD) and has an antenna that emits a localized EMF field that when something comes close to the antenna lights and an audible alarm sound (REM). The “shadow detector” operates by an electronic eye that is sensitive to light, including IR light. If something reduces the amount of total light perceived by the electronic eye, an audible alarm and lights go off.
The EMF and temperature portion of the meter can be operated separately from all three other features (ATDD, SDD, and REM) as these features have separate on/off buttons located on the back of the meter behind the built-in stand.
PIM uses this meter almost exclusively for the “shadow detection” feature to cover hallways or areas where there are reports of shadow people or people moving across a somewhat limited space. PIM uses this meter in conjunction with an IR light (instead of the included red light emitters) to maintain light control during investigations.

SPECS:
- EMF Meter: Detects AC/DC electromagnetic frequencies (30Hz to 300Hz range) with fast-response digital readouts, 6-level strength/distance LED indicators, and a 100ms rapid EMF Burst mode. [1, 2]
- Digital Thermometer & ATDD (Ambient Temperature Deviation Detection): Measures ambient temperature in Fahrenheit and Celsius via a fast-response thermal probe. The ATDD circuit monitors a ±5°F/C range for hot and cold spots, triggering ascending or descending audible tones and multi-colored LED alerts. [1, 2]
- REM Function (Radiating Electromagnetic Field): Uses an extendable mini telescopic antenna to emit an independent local magnetic field. If a conductive object or entity enters or distorts the field, it triggers proportional LED and tone alerts, featuring a 5-second automatic baseline zero/calibration. [1, 2]
- SDD Function (Shadow Deviation Detection): Utilizes integrated red light emitters (long and short range) to set a light barrier and detect shadow movement or light variations with an audible alarm circuit. [1, 2]
- Display & Night Vision: Features a bright Red Night-View Backlit Display designed not to disrupt night-vision equipment. [1, 2]
- Additional Tools: Built-in high-intensity red flashlight, glow-in-the-dark push buttons (require 5 minutes of bright light charge), min/max value capture memory, and a rear flip-out stand / tripod mount. [1, 2]
- Power & Build: Powered by a 9Vdc alkaline battery (with extra battery sources for secondary illumination/SDD functions depending on the exact model tier), housed in a portable unit weighing around 8–10 oz.
