Arrival

Edinburgh Manor’s imposing facade reminds you that when you look at it, it looks right back.

Noah, Tony, and Gravy arrived at Edinburgh Manor at 1:00 pm. They met with a caretaker to get a key to the back house and the Manor itself, to pay, and to sign release forms. After completing these things, the caretaker left, leaving the team to bring in equipment and start setting up.

On the 2nd Floor, a Sony DCR-DVD610 camera was placed covering the staircase and the 2nd Floor Hallway on the Women’s side. Also in the 2nd Floor Hallway on the Women’s side was an EDI+ datalogging meter that was in view of the camera.

On the 1st Floor Men’s Side, the team placed a Sony HDR-CX160 multi-spectrum camera which covered the Men’s Hallway leading back toward the Main Entrance and the Men’s Rec Room. Also placed in the 1st Floor Hallway was a Zoom H1 digital audio recorder which was also covering the Children’s Room. Partially down the hallway was an EDI+ datalogging meter.

In the Children’s Room, a Sony HDR-CX160 multi-spectrum camera was placed along with an EDI+ datalogging meter and a Touch Flashlight.

In the Basement, a Sony HDR-CX160 multi-spectrum camera was placed in the Laundry Room. This camera covered the entire Laundry Room and the Trigger Object Bank that was placed on the table located in the middle of the Laundry Room. The camera also covered the hallway between the Laundry Room and the Cafeteria. Also included in the Laundry Room was a Zoom H1 audio recorder. The Trigger Object Bank included a geophone, Touch Flashlight, DM X-930 Dark Matter Detector, the PIM Platter, bullet, cigar, cigarettes, deck of cards with Ace of Diamonds on top, pair of di showing snake eyes, Playboy magazine, whiskey, Bible, crucifix, Holy relic, Rosary, Holy water, and a harmonica.

In the hallway between the Laundry Room and the Cafeteria, a MEL8704R REM/ATDD/SDD meter was placed. This meter was using the REM and SDD functions only and was placed in this hallway to alert the team if anything moved down the hallway and came close to the meter. Also placed in the hallway was an EDI+ datalogging meter.

In the Cafeteria, a Sony HDR-CX160 multi-spectrum camera was placed to cover the Cafeteria and the hallway between the Cafeteria and the Laundry Room. Also placed in the Cafeteria was a Zoom H1 audio recorder.

Lastly, covering Joker’s Hallway was a Sony DCR-DVD610 camera.

Once all equipment had been placed, the team went around and took baseline readings at 4:19 pm. This readings can be viewed below.

Environmental Data

The team then went around and started and time stamped all equipment beginning at 6:07 pm. Time stamps, from a designated atomic watch, are used as a point of reference and make cross referencing easier during evidence review. Once all equipment had been started, the team then headed out for dinner and left the building empty.

At approximately 8:15 pm, the group returned from dinner, re-entered the Manor and started and time stamped their control recorders. From this point on, PIM members are required to speak in full voice and tag any noise they make.

Tagging is the process of calling out noises investigators make during an investigation. Noises investigators make can be anything from bodily sounds, such as stomach growling or breathing noises, to external noises, like squeaky shoes, shifting or chairs creaking. Tagging is required from the moment a piece of equipment is started until the time it is turned off. This allows for easy identification of noises heard when reviewing evidence. When an investigator makes a noise, it is their responsibility to tag it or say, “that was me.”

Every member of PIM is equipped with a Zoom H1 audio recorder, which is used as their control recorder and an Extech RHT50 or Extech SD700 datalogger. Control recorders are not only used as another recording device, but also to document the sound contamination that an investigator might create during an investigation. Control recorders are started and time stamped first before any other equipment is started and they are turned off last to ensure any anomalous noises can be cross-checked. Control recorders are also placed in a Faraday cage. A Faraday cage is a container that can block EMF frequencies. The construction of the cage will determine how many different EMF frequencies the cage will be able to block. Faraday cages work by generating an external static electrical field which causes the electric charges within the cage’s conducting material to be distributed such that they cancel the field’s effect in the cage’s interior. PIM’s cages are designed to specifically block out FM and some AM radio frequencies from interfering with their audio recorders, thus creating false EVPs.

At 8:30 pm the group began the investigation on the 1st Floor.

Investigation Night 1

8:30 pm – 1st Floor Men’s side

The group spread out on the 1st Floor Men’s side with Noah sitting outside the Children’s Room, Gravy sitting inside the Children’s Room, and Tony sitting in the hallway that leads to the 1st Floor Men’s Rec Room. After getting settled the team began the investigation by observing control silence starting at 8:32 pm.

Control silence is the practice of sitting quietly and getting accustomed to the normal sounds of the building. It allows for investigators to get a baseline of normal building sounds. The team spread out along the hallway. Noted during control silence was the crickets, stomach noises, and an air conditioner.

Shortly after control silence began, Noah heard a beeping noise that he could not locate at first. Tony and Gravy also heard it. After a brief investigation, it was determined that the beeping noise was coming from Noah’s Extech SD700 meter. Control silence was restarted at 8:36 pm. After control silence was complete, team reported hearing the IR light fans, stomach noises, building noises, and traffic.

Noah began the EVP session at 8:38 pm. An EVP (electronic voice phenomenon) session is the practice of asking questions and leaving ten seconds of silence in between in hopes of capturing a response via an audio recording device. Rarely is a response heard by the investigator’s ears and when a response is heard by human ears it is called a disembodied voice.

No activity occurred and the group decided to head down to the 1st Floor Women’s side at 8:56 pm.

8:56 pm – 1st Floor Women’s side

The team spread out on the 1st Floor Women’s side. Gravy was in front of Room 102, Noah sat in the middle where the two hallways met, and Tony was sitting closest to the 1st Floor Women’s Rec Room.

Control silence was started at 8:58 pm. Again, right after starting control silence Noah heard a strange noise, this time a humming sound. The group investigated to try and determine if there was a light on that could be turned off, but none were found. In the end, it was determined the noise was coming from an overhead light and the group restarted control silence at 9:02 pm. The group reported hearing the humming noise, flies hitting windows, and building noises. Also, right after the control silence was restarted, a piece of plastic that had been taped over a window on a door in the middle of the building on the 1st floor fell off. The team quickly went and secured the plastic back over the window, returning to start the EVP session.

Gravy began the EVP session at 9:08 pm.

After asking multiple questions, no responses were captured. This EVP session was concluded and the team decided to head to the 2nd Floor at 9:23 pm.

9:23 pm – 2nd Floor

The group spread themselves throughout the middle of the 2nd Floor. Noah was sitting at the top of the stairs, Gravy was sitting toward the Women’s side and Tony was sitting towards the Men’s side.

No events occurred during the EVP session and the team decided to move to the Men’s side at 10:05 pm.

10:05 pm – 2nd Floor Men’s side

Noah was sitting at the hallway junction, Gravy was sitting toward the Rec Room side and Tony was sitting toward the bedroom side. Control silence was started at 10:07 pm with only building noises reported when control silence ended.

At 10:09 pm, Noah began the EVP session. At 10:10 pm, Gravy reported hearing what he described as a “cape flapping” noise. No one else heard the noise and it was not captured on any recording devices. The team concluded it could be the sound of birds roosting outside flapping their wings.

No other events occurred during this EVP session and the team decided to head to the Basement at 10:13 pm.

10:15 pm – Basement Joker’s Hallway

Noah sat in the Joker’s Room, Tony sat in the room directly across the hall from the Joker’s Room, and Gravy sat in the hallway toward the Cafeteria. Control silence was started at 10:21 pm and only stomach noises were noted.

At 12:28 am, Noah heard a high-pitched noise. Again, no one else heard it and it was not captured on any recording devices.

No other events of note occurred during this EVP session and the team moved down to the Laundry Room.

12:34 am – Laundry Room

Team spread out in the Laundry Room, taking different spots than the first time they investigated this space.

At 12:38 am, Gravy started the EVP session. At 12:39 am, Noah hears a strange noise that Tony and Gravy do not hear. Despite trying to find the source, nothing definitive is found. It is noted that it is possible the noise came from one of the pieces of plastic covering the windows from the outside.

No other events occurred during this session, and the team took a quick break at 12:48 am to change cards in their cameras. The team then continued the investigation on the 1st Floor.

1:04 am – 1st Floor Women’s side

Tony sat outside Room 102, Gravy sat on the Rec Room side and Noah sat at the hallway junction.

Investigation Night 2

The team decided to conduct some daytime investigating since there was time. The team started and timestamped all of the equipment and then headed to the 2nd Floor.

4:41 pm – 2nd Floor

The team spread out on the 2nd Floor in the center. Control silence was started at 4:42 pm. The wind had picked up compared to the day prior and could be heard along with the standard traffic.

At 4:44 pm, Noah started an EVP session. No event occurred during this session and the team moved down to the 1st Floor.

4:56 pm – 1st Floor

Upon reaching the 1st Floor, the team realized that outside weather conditions still needed to be taken so the team headed outside to do that at 4:59 pm.

After completing the outside weather conditions, the team headed out to dinner at 5:10 pm.

The team returned from dinner at 6:30 pm. At this point it was decided that Tony, Gravy, and Noah would each spend 30 minutes solo inside the Manor while the other two remained in the bunk house. Tony went first and entered the Manor at 7:15 pm and after getting his control equipment running, headed to the 2nd Floor to start the solo investigation.

At 9:00 pm, Tony and Noah rejoined Gravy in the Manor and headed to the Laundry Room in the Basement to continue the investigation together.

9:04 pm – Laundry Room

At 9:05 pm an EVP session was started. At 9:07 pm, a plastic noise is again heard coming from what seems down the hallway that leads to the Cafeteria. Noah and Tony investigated to see if any of the plastic had fallen off any of the door windows that had been used to block out light and nothing was out of place. Due to the increased wind, it is believed the sound may have came from outside the Manor due to the plastic that was placed on the windows from the outside.

Nothing else occurred during this session and the team moved down to the Cafeteria.
